The Insurance Service Office is an independent private company that rates a community's ability to provide fire suppression activities. Departments are rated on a scale of 1 to 10, with 1 being the best and 10 being the poorest. These evaluations are most thorough covering all aspects of a department's competence in rendering fire protection. The city administration and the fire department worked very hard to improve the water distribution systems and TFD’s equipment and capabilities. The City of Tomball was, in 2001, awarded a class 1 designation for the area inside the city limits and a class 2 designation for the areas in what is now Harris County Emergency Services District #15.
These public protection classifications are used by most insurance companies to set rates for their policy holders. The lower the class number the lower the insurance premium, thus there is a significant benefit for a community to invest in its fire protection system. Check with your insurance company and insure that it is crediting you with a class 1 or 2 rate.
